The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) will likely push back hard on any weight-based charging regime, as will manufacturers whose most profitable lines are precisely the heavy SUVs and electric vehicles under scrutiny. But the scientific case is becoming harder to dismiss.
For ordinary drivers, the message is both sobering and empowering. The roads are getting worse partly because of choices being made in showrooms across the country. That doesn't make SUV owners villains — but it does mean that the conversation about how we fund and protect Britain's road network needs to become far more honest about who is actually bearing the cost, and who is causing the damage.
